How Often Should You Get a Haircut? A Stylist's Guide
February 24, 2025 · InStyle Salon Team
One of the most common questions we hear at InStyle Salon in Johns Creek is: How often should I get a haircut? The answer depends on your hair type, style, and goals. Here’s a simple guide.
General Guidelines
- Short cuts or sharp shapes: Every 4–6 weeks to maintain the look.
- Medium-length hair: Every 6–8 weeks to keep ends healthy and style intact.
- Long hair: Every 8–12 weeks for a trim that prevents split ends without losing length.
- Growing out: A light trim every 10–12 weeks can keep ends healthy while you grow.
If You Have Color or Heat Damage
Frequent color or heat styling can make ends more fragile. Trimming every 6–8 weeks helps prevent breakage and keeps your color looking fresh. We can tailor a schedule during your visit.
If You’re Growing Your Hair Out
You don’t have to skip trims. Regular small trims remove split ends so they don’t travel up the strand. That actually helps you retain length over time.
The Best Rule
When in doubt, ask your stylist. At InStyle Salon, we’ll look at your hair and your style and recommend a schedule that works for you. Book your next haircut in Johns Creek, or browse our haircut services to see our full menu.
